PAD Joins Coalition to Call for Holistic Public Safety Strategy for World Cup
PAD joins Atlanta firefighters, community violence interrupters, immigrants rights advocates, and many community organizations to call for a holistic public safety strategy that ensures community members get the care they need during the World Cup tournament and beyond.
Current plans are limited to police response, which risks over-burdening 911 emergency services, increasing arrests for low-level violations, and exposing residents and visitors to ICE involvement.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Atlanta has PAD, which can respond through 311 for concerns related to extreme poverty, mental health and substance use; Atlanta has WII Care and Hope Hustlers and Mothers Against Gang Violence among other community violence intervention groups, which prevent and respond to conflict and gun violence; Atlanta has immigrants rights organizations which provide rapid response support to community members targeted by ICE; Atlanta has firefighters who need our support to be able to do their jobs.
We want to do our part to care for Atlanta—and we need City leadership to commit to a holistic strategy that includes us.
